First Official Match of the Ryder Cup

The first official match of the Ryder Cup was held in 1927 at Worcester Country Club, Massachusetts, USA. There were two main participants, one was the USA team and the other was the Great Britain team. At that time, only Great Britain and Ireland were involved in this tournament; the whole continent of Europe could not be involved. The USA Golf team dominated in this first and official tournament.
The trophy was donated by Samuel Ryder. He was a wealthy English seed merchant and golf enthusiast—hence the name “Ryder Cup.”

Early Period

The era from 1927 to 1977 is considered the early period of the Ryder Cup. In this era, the USA Golf team dominated even before and after World War II. It was estimated that the USA had won 18 matches out of 22 in this period. Some tournaments were suspended during the War, but the USA remained prevalent.
This created low competition and boredom in the golf tournament, and the attention of spectators was also low.

Expansion Period

It was the need of the time to create an environment of competition in the tournament. So in the beginning of 1997, there was a discussion that arose between Jack Nicklaus and Edward Stanley (18th Earl of Derby), who was serving as the president of the Professional Golfers’ Association. The eligible and active golf players were included in the team from Europe.

This change was fruitful and the tournaments of Ryder Cup Tournaments returned to the competition level. It gained the attention of the media, investors, and spectators.

Ryder Cup Europe Team

The Era of the Rise of Europe

1980-1990— There were many compatible European players who participated in the golf team. In this new format of 1985, the European team defeated the USA team at The Belfry, England.
The Golf tournament returned to its actual peak, and the rivalry between the two teams was seen. The European team had won many tournaments under the captaincy of one of the great players, Seve Ballesteros.

Back & Forth Battle Era

This is the era of battle between the great rivals from 2000-2020. The European Golf team gained many significant victories over the USA. After some time USA golf team gained its momentum at Valhalla Golf Club, Kentucky, in 2008. The European players gave tough competition to the rival players, and this is the era of the growth of the Ryder Cup Tournaments.
